Monday is the New Friday
…Up and down I-5 more than a serial killer , like a smuggler, like a trucker …drinking when I should be sleeping… sleeping when I should be waking up. never hung over. either wide awake or way too drunk…”18 Wheels” - Murder City Devils
It’s been a while since my last post; I’ve gotten pretty busy with work and hanging out with different people I have been meeting and playing in a new band…but mainly busy with work.
I got a job doing route sales for a big company distributing chips. I was hired on as a relief sales person - basically jumping around from route to route covering vacations. I recently had the opportunity to bid for a position covering three different routes for the regular salesman’s days off. The good thing about this position is that it offers consistency; I’m on the same three routes every week and I don’t have to worry about getting to know new stores each week. The tough part is that these are the three busiest routes out of my distribution center and I usually start work around 2 am each day- and I had to deal with getting used to driving a big truck. There’s been a few times I have had to start at 1 am which means I end up waking up around midnight.
For me, the toughest part of the job is trying to get to sleep early. I haven’t really adjusted my sleeping habits so I end up getting a few hours of sleep. Lately weekends have been rough; since my two days off are Tuesday and Wednesday, I end up going out on a Friday and Saturday night and struggle to make it on 4 to 6 hours of sleep for the entire weekend until I get a day off…napping has become my new hobby. The other morning I was a little embarrassed when I realized the receiver at one of my stores could probably smell the whiskey I had been consuming the night before.
I have been employed with this company for nearly six months. When I first started a lot of people warned me that the first six months to a year would be the toughest and I would reach a breaking point and want to quit. So far this has not happened.
So I’m writing this as I finish off my weekend and I plan on getting off my ass and producing more consistent posts. I have plenty of things to write about- a new band, new group of friends, new job, – so I have no excuse to not post things with more frequency.
